Neil Smith (writer)
Neil Smith is a Canadian fiction writer. A three-time nominee for the Journey Prize, Smith published his debut collection, ''Bang Crunch'', with Knopf Canada in 2007. It was later published in America, Britain, France, Germany, and India. It was chosen as a best book of the year by the ''Washington Post'' and the ''Globe and Mail''. It won the Best First Book Prize from the Quebec Writers' Federation. Writer Michel Faber wrote in the ''Guardian'' that Bang Crunch had a "rare fusion of thematic boldness, humor, gravity, empathy, maturity, and first-rate prose." 〔http://www.theguardian.com/books/2007/dec/15/featuresreviews.guardianreview24〕
His second book, a novel called ''Boo'',〔http://www.cookeagency.ca/books/Smith-N_Boo.htm〕 came out in May 2015 with Vintage Books in America, William Heinemann in Britain,〔http://www.randomhouse.co.uk/editions/boo/9780434023493〕 and Knopf in Canada. The book is narrated by a young science geek named Oliver Dalrymple who finds himself in a heaven reserved exclusively for thirteen-year-olds. ''Boo'' will be published in Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Mandarin, and Portuguese. ''Publishers Weekly'' gave the novel a starred review, calling it "surprising and moving" and "splendidly confident." ''Boo'' won the Hugh MacLennan Prize, an annual award for best book of fiction from Quebec.
Smith lives in Montreal with his partner, Christian Dorais.〔("New author's 'surreal' success" ), ''Xtra!'', February 1, 2007.〕 He also works as a translator.〔(''Bang Crunch'', Neil Smith ), ''Montreal Review of Books'', Spring 2007.〕 He translated into English ''La déesse des mouches à feu'', the acclaimed novel by Quebec author Geneviève Pettersen.〔http://www.lequartanier.com/catalogue/deesse.htm〕 The book will be released as ''The Goddess of Fireflies'' in March 2016 by Véhicule Press.
